Within crystal traditions, Bloodstone is often chosen during demanding periods when someone wants to feel more grounded, focused, energized, and ready to keep moving forward.
The Stone
Bloodstone is a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz. It is typically dark green with red, reddish-brown, or occasionally yellow inclusions.
The red markings are commonly caused by iron oxide minerals such as hematite, while the green color comes from mineral inclusions within the chalcedony.
Bloodstone is also historically known as heliotrope, a name derived from Greek words relating to the sun.
Mineral Family: Chalcedony / Quartz
Mohs Hardness: Approximately 6.5–7
Typical Colors: Dark green with red, brown, or yellow inclusions
Common Sources: India, Brazil, Australia, China, Madagascar, Germany, and the United States
History & Lore
Bloodstone has a long history stretching back to the ancient world.
Greek and Roman traditions associated heliotrope with strength, protection, vitality, and courage. Its dark green color marked with red spots naturally inspired stories and symbolism involving blood, sacrifice, bravery, and renewal.
During the Middle Ages, Bloodstone became connected with Christian legends and was sometimes called the “martyr’s stone.”
Across different traditions, the stone has also been carried as a talisman of courage and endurance.
Within modern crystal practices, Bloodstone continues to be associated with grounding, perseverance, motivation, courage, and energetic renewal.
